Chain of Custody
This is a method by which paper can be tracked right back to its source. A chain of custody audit is carried out by organisations such as the FSC. Any product that bears the FSC mark can be tracked through every link in the chain so that a buyer can be confident that the paper comes from forests managed under the FSC scheme.

FSC
Forestry Stewardship Council. The most widely recognised and trusted organisation promoting responsible forest management. The FSC logo gives international recognition of products that support the growth of responsible forest management worldwide. The FSC operates in 45 countries and has certified more than 90 million hectares of forestry land. See www.fsc.org

ISO 14001
The International Standards Organisation’s standard for companies committed to taking care of the environment. If you’re feeling really geeky you can watch a five minute Youtube video all about it...

Post-consumer Waste
Waste paper that is sent for recycling from homes and offices.

Pre-consumer Waste
Waste paper from paper mills and printers.

Recovered Fibre
The general term used for waste paper that has been sent for recycling – can include both post and pre-consumer waste.

TCF
Totally Chlorine Free. Paper mills used to use chlorine to bleach paper and increase their whiteness. But chlorine is toxic and causes environmental problems. TCF paper has been bleached without using chlorine. Instead the mills usually use either liquid oxygen, sodium hydroxide or hydrogen peroxide.
